What is RP?

     RP(Rapid Prototyping) is the name given to a host of related technologies that are used to fabricate physical objects directly from CAD data sources, such as Pro/E or I-DEAS. Solid model CAD data transfers to STL data which is a triangular mesh of solid model. Then RP system layers the triangular mesh model and re- prints them layer by layer to build up the final model.

     Now the academic and industry use RP technology a lot. The benefits of RP technology are fast, convenient and low skillful. Now the high payroll of industrialized countries accepted RP system to replace the traditional manufacturing.

Features
     The best advantage of RP system is to produce any complex and compound shapes. Lots of shapes such as sculptures or jewelry are quite difficult to machine subtractive, but it is easy for RP system.

3D CAD  Data

The 3D CAD data must be a seamless model. It could be a surface model or a solid model.

STL Interface

STL data format contains a lot of triangular meshes with normal vector units and vertex coordinate data.  A good STL data has united normal vectors which point outside and stitch adjoining triangular vertex. Most solid model gets good STL data, but surface model got problems and need to fix.

Preprocess

Adjust part orientation,  build supporting and set process parameters.

RP Process

RP machine layers each section with a fixed layer thickness resin. Each layer can be vectors or bit maps.

Post Process

Clean parts and finish appearance.
